For those who do not have enough resources for income to support themselves and their families, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may be available as a means of assistance. The story told of how a 42-year-old claims processor in Memphis, Tennessee, had been illegally contacting and charging applicants a “processing fee” for approving their claim for SSI. Reports indicate that once a claim was approved and funds had been distributed, the processor would contact recipients through phone calls and text messages demanding they pay a fee.
The processor was later charged with counts of extortion and bribery.
Investigators say there may be more victims though and encourage anyone who was contacted regarding paying a fee after receiving SSI benefits to contact the Social Security Administration to report the incident.
